Propulsion Subsystem Design Engineer

Our Client is looking for a Propulsion Subsystem Design Engineer for a new satellite manufacture which will disrupt the existing satellite communications market.

Their satellite manufacturing will be producing compact communication satellites (500 Kg - 1000 Kg) for Geostationary orbit (GEO) systems for operation around the world and a range of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite platforms and applications.

We are therefore seeking the highest calibre individuals to join their design and manufacturing team.

Responsibilities

The Propulsion Subsystem Design Engineer will be responsible for all aspects of the spacecraft thrust and manoeuvring capabilities.

They will be responsible for the definition and procurement of the thrusters and associated equipment.

They will be responsible for ensuring that the spacecraft has sufficient propellant with margin for the mission lifetime including any de-orbit or re-orbit.

  • Define the Propulsion subsystem in terms of the trade-of between monopropellant, hybrid or electric (hall thrusters) taking into account the mission parameters and producing the relevant documentation for the system PDR and CDR
  • Define the propulsion subsystem in terms of thruster and tanking requirements, fuel load and mass
  • Liaise with the Program Manager for the procurement of commercial propulsion components and units
  • Monitor and follow the procurement of the propulsion subsystem component including qualification
  • Liaise with the Structural/Mechanical Engineer for the placement of thrusters, valves etc. internally and externally
  • Support the Program Manager on all aspects of the platform design pertaining to propulsion
  • Liaise with the GNC Engineers for propulsion control interfaces and pointing determination
  • Ensure that all platform program documentation for the Propulsion subsystem (ICDs, diagrams, budgets etc.) is produced
  • Produce the propellant budget and fuelling procedures

Qualifications and Experience

  • Minimum of 5 years professional experience in spacecraft propulsion systems definition and implementation
  • Strong knowledge of propulsion evolution including electric (Hall thrusters), green monopropellant and hybrid systems
  • Ability and willingness to include latest generation processes and techniques for manufacturing
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills
  • Strong technical background and proven program history
  • Ability to produce spacecraft budgets and specifications

Location and Duration

  • The location for the task is in Melbourne, Florida and some amount of home working and travel may be envisaged
  • Some attendance at reviews at propulsion subsystem manufacturers premises may be envisaged
  • This task is envisaged for 2 years commencing December 2023, with the possibility for the position to be permanent
